{"id":688,"date":"2012-12-18T17:42:54","date_gmt":"2012-12-18T22:42:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/georgianbayphotographs.ca\/gbay_blog\/?p=688"},"modified":"2013-06-24T19:57:12","modified_gmt":"2013-06-24T23:57:12","slug":"context-is-everything","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/georgianbayphotographs.ca\/?p=688","title":{"rendered":"Tunnel Vision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People have limited memories, so we rely on recorded information to help us. \u00a0After awhile we have so much information that we can&#8217;t cope, all that information becomes noise. \u00a0In response we have created tools to filter and manipulate the noise. \u00a0Problem is that filtering and manipulation can easily result in misinterpretations of the results.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Imagine viewing the world through a long black \u00a0pipe. \u00a0Depending on where you point the pipe, the world could be all green or all blue.<\/p>\n<p>Environment Canada issues a monthly publication available on-line, <a title=\"Monthly News Letters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ec.gc.ca\/eau-water\/default.asp?lang=En&amp;n=F6F3D96B-1\" target=\"_blank\">LEVELnews<\/a>. \u00a0The December issue <a title=\"Monthly Water Report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ec.gc.ca\/eau-water\/default.asp?lang=En&amp;xml=85834C20-12BB-4908-AA47-6AABEA7F6C00\" target=\"_blank\">Volume 10, Number 12<\/a>, contained some grim statistical data. \u00a0Using that long black pipe to view water levels can be very misleading. \u00a0A single moment compared to a year ago could easily lead to a &#8220;sky is falling&#8221; view. In this case December 1st is reported 42 cm below the same date a year ago. \u00a0The graph below shows the problem with using &#8220;year ago&#8221; statistics. \u00a0The bottom line is 2012, the top 2011, in the middle is 2009 and 2010 (the y axis is water level relative to chart datum, x axis is in hours).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/georgianbayphotographs.ca\/GBay_Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/December-1st-comparison.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-690\" title=\"December 1st comparison\" src=\"http:\/\/georgianbayphotographs.ca\/GBay_Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/December-1st-comparison.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"661\" srcset=\"http:\/\/georgianbayphotographs.ca\/GBay_Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/December-1st-comparison.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/georgianbayphotographs.ca\/GBay_Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/December-1st-comparison-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Again our field of view is important, this windows shows a low of .6 meters at the beginning of December. \u00a0If we include more days either side of the 1st, we see that a major dip had actually occurred, the term for this is a Seiche. \u00a0It can be caused by a variety of environmental influences, wind, barometric pressure, and tidal. \u00a0The lowest point on this graph just happens to be the 1st of the month. \u00a0If this graph were shifted a few days on the calendar, water levels for the beginning of the month wouldn&#8217;t be so scary, and in-line with 2009, 2010 levels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/georgianbayphotographs.ca\/GBay_Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Nov-15-Dec-15-2012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-691\" title=\"Nov 15 - Dec 15, 2012\" src=\"http:\/\/georgianbayphotographs.ca\/GBay_Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Nov-15-Dec-15-2012.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"664\" srcset=\"http:\/\/georgianbayphotographs.ca\/GBay_Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Nov-15-Dec-15-2012.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/georgianbayphotographs.ca\/GBay_Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Nov-15-Dec-15-2012-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the end water levels are low.
